Peng Chau

Creator

Ironshroom Pottery Studio was founded in 2023 by Aby Emmet Shaw (b.1995) and Iris Chen Qin (b.1998) while pursuing their Master’s degrees at the Academy of Visual Arts, Hong Kong Baptist University.

Shaw originally studied chemistry before shifting his path to apprentice under renowned ceramic artists Nic Collins and Sabine Nemet. He later worked in a hand-made flower pot factory and has since traveled to Japan and Jingdezhen for advanced ceramic research.

Chen was trained in Experimental Art at the China Academy of Art. Her practice navigates between fictional narrative and material remains.

To date, the duo has collaborated with restaurants to produce bespoke dinnerware, conducted extensive research on local clay sources on Lamma Island, and built a wood-fired kiln, which they fueled using fallen wood salvaged from typhoons.

Their work embodies themes of sustainability, ecology, and slow-growth. Through experimental approaches in ceramic art, they integrate spirituality with utility, treating each object as a relic of both the present and the future.

Mark Chung

Peng Chau

Creator

Mark Chung (b. 1990, New Zealand) is an artist working and living in Hong Kong.

Though his given name is Mark and his maternal name Jenewein, his paternal name belongs to a non-phonetic language system, ensuring the unfortunate inconvenience of a futile romanisation process. By applying three common translinguistic systems used in close geographical, cultural, linguistic, and political proximity with the tongue Mark grew up with, his family name could be Zung1, Tsung, or Jāng. That said, a simplified version of the Standard Romanisation for Cantonese (a system used by Christian Missionaries in the 1880s) was implemented by the authority of the Hong Kong colonial government, who gave him the family name “Chung”.

Peng Chau Archive

Peng Chau

Community-builder

The Peng Chau Archive is a project that aims at challenging official historical narratives about Peng Chau by collecting residents’ memories in the form of testimonies, photos or artifacts. It gathered island residents, new and old, at various times. Participating members:

Myriem is a PhD student at the Department of Geography and Resource Management, CUHK, where she works on urban islands and political ecology. She is based on Peng Chau, where she co-founded Islanders Zine, the Inter-Island Festival, and Nam Wan Bookshop.

April is a descendant of fishermen. It is her pleasure to be one of the curators of this project so she can know more about her family's history. For example, the living condition on the boat, the life being a fisherman and the career change from a fisherman to be a worker.

Jimmie studied in France, where she immersed herself in discourse analysis and the practice of theatre. Before the pandemic, she relocated to an outlying island, and there embarked upon a long observation of island life and its inhabitants. From this sustained attention, there grew a devotion to maritime literature and ecological writing. She responds to the island through the act of writing—attempting, within the fabric of language, to preserve and to generate the stories that belong to this place. She has authored "潮汐之間" and "戲院席間".

Lantau Pottery Studio

Mui Wo

Creator

Lantau Pottery Studio is the project of Fatima Morrissey, a ceramic artist and educator based in Mui Wo. Since 2013, she has served the community through adult courses, children's classes, workshops, and shared studio space—remaining a creative anchor in the neighborhood for over a decade.

Morrissey’s ceramic pieces are quiet, three-dimensional stories drawn from the map of her life. Through earthy texture and vivid illustration, her works evoke a nostalgia both familiar and distant. Her style blends Austrian folklore, symbolic imagery from India, and the enduring aesthetics of her husband's Southeast Asian culture—creating illustrated heirlooms that whisper of old-world wisdom and new-world possibilities.

For the Inter-island Festival, Morrissey steps into a new role as curator of Between Tides—the studio's first collective exhibition of children's work. Curated from ten years of teaching in a place shaped by water and tides, the exhibition is not a showcase of juvenile effort, but a considered curation of genuine artistic voices—guided by Fatima's eye and fired in her kiln.

Lantau Pottery Studio is located at G/F, 28, Rural Committee Rd, Mui Wo, Lantau Island.

Alexandra Stewart-Long (Bisque-Kit)

Chi Ma Wan

Creator

Alexandra Stewart-Long is a qualified architect whose work has taken her across the UK, China, and Hong Kong. Having lived in Hong Kong for the past seven years, she’s developed a deep interest in the relationship between the places we inhabit, the natural environment, and the materials we use to shape them.

She is particularly interested in understanding where materials come from, the impact they have on our environment, and what happens to them when we no longer need them. With growing pressure on landfills around the world, Stewart-Long believes there is huge potential in reconsidering what we call “waste” — recognising that many discarded materials still have valuable properties and possibilities for reuse.

This thinking led her to establish Bisque-Kit, a series of hands-on creative workshops that reconnect people with nature through making. Using earth and other natural or repurposed materials, the workshops encourage participants to explore where materials come from, how they behave, and how we can make more thoughtful choices about what we use and throw away.

Based in Mui Wo, she is inspired by Lantau’s unique landscapes, wildlife, and communities, and is passionate about celebrating and protecting the environment she calls home.

Louis To Wun

Creator

Louis To Wun is a versatile contemporary artist, whose works range from painting and sculpture to candy and bamboo intangible culture.

His artistic career began in the 1990s at a rented house on Lamma Island, where he and a group of painter friends shared days of vigorous painting. His work has since been exhibited at major institutions like the Hong Kong Museum of Art, Hong Kong Arts Centre, PS1 MOMA, British Museum, and venues in Beijing, Shanghai, and Macao. In 2004, To co-founded the gallery and music club, SENSE 99, a popular hang-out for creatives.

In 2010, wanting to share a childhood memory with his daughter, he looked, unsuccessfully, for someone to teach him the disappearing, 600-year-old art of candy sculpting. Through countless experiments, he managed to teach himself, and now creates candy sculptures under the name Sugarman.

To is also skilled in the art of zi zaat (bamboo sculpting). As a Cheung Chau resident, he is often invited to repair festival qilin (unicorns); from 2013 to 2019, he was commissioned to create the leading qilin of the Tai Ping Ching Chiu Festival. As both a painter and sculptor, he’s developed a unique visual style for his qilin..  In 2015, he invented a waterproofing method for the bamboo sculptures, a technical breakthrough that allowed the ritual dancers to start performing sea ceremonies, in addition to supporting larger sculpture production and long-term conservation. His bamboo artistry has appeared in numerous forums: as wearable dancers’ costumes; in Christopher Doyle’s Hong Kong Film Trilogy; at Leica Design Week Kyoto and Art Central Hong Kong; and as interactive artworks for the sight- and hearing-impaired.

Preston Hartwick is a visual artist who grew up in Hong Kong and has lived on Cheung Chau Island since 2014. His ongoing project, Hong Kong Aesthetic, is a decade-long counter archive of Hong Kong’s undocumented design — the colors, textures, and patterns that comprise the city’s underlying visual fabric.

Preston was selected as a featured artist for the Inter-Island Festival 2023, where he designed an installation re-interpreting the controversial Lantau Tomorrow Vision reclamation project as a figment of a failed technocratic fantasy.

He published his first photobook, Bela Vista, in 2021, chronicling six years of observing the interplay between ocean, people, and animals contained within the field of view from a single window overlooking the beach.

Before this, Preston’s photography and sculptural installations have been featured in multiple exhibitions across Hong Kong. He has an intense love for analog photography and can usually be found in his darkroom experimenting with historical photographic processes.
