Who We Are...
About the Festival
The Inter-island Festival (IIF) is a celebration of the rich and varied cultures living by the sea on Hong Kong’s outlying islands. Inspired by the existing inter-island ferry connection between Cheung Chau, Peng Chau, and Lantau Island’s Chi Ma Wan and Mui Wo—as well as the Inter-island Sea surrounding them—IIF brings together original, thematic research and creative projects that offer new perspectives and a deeper understanding of the inter-island archipelago. Each iteration of the Festival consists of cultural activities that delve into lesser-known aspects of the region, many of which are proposed or led by island residents themselves.
With a bottom-up, down-to-earth, and playful approach, we aim to strengthen the connections within and between each island, both among the four ports and with the sea itself. Through our archipelagic perspective, we aspire to shift the perception of islands and the sea in Hong Kong, not as peripheral underdeveloped areas dependent on the city, but as an intricate, flourishing, and self-sustaining networks of places and people in dialogue with a city that is, itself, essentially a cluster of inter-connected islands and peninsulas.
Having successfully completed two editions in March 2021 and November 2023, IIF has established itself as one of the major public art projects in Hong Kong’s rural areas.
IIF was founded by Myriem Alnet and Kit Chan (of Islanders Limited) and Yip Kai-chun, all of whom are based in Peng Chau. Each iteration invites co-curators from each of the four inter-island ports connected by the Inter-island Ferry to join the organising team.

The Team
Inter-island Festival was initiated in 2019 by three Peng Chau kai fong : Myriem Alnet, Chan Chun-kit, and Yip Kai-chun. Chun is an artist–curator with experience organising art events on the island. Myriem, an urbanist–scholar, and Kit are co-founders of Nam Wan Bookshop and ‘ISLANDERS’, a zine on island cultures. Kit is also one of the management team of Peng Chau Cinema project. Witnessing the changes happening across the islands, they responded by creating this festival to connect everyone interested in contributing to the future of the islands.
