Between Floating Isles — An Extended Lifeworld Along the Inter-Island Ferry

Cheung Chau, Peng Chau, and the Lantau communities of Mui Wo and Chi Ma Wan may seem to city dwellers like rural areas unable to sustain themselves independently. Yet these islands have long maintained close ties, exchanging goods and meeting one another’s needs. An island network of communities, largely independent of the city, has long since taken shape.

Whether selling fish, buying vegetables, seeing a doctor, seeking entertainment, hiking, going to school, or going to work—what exactly do island residents travel to other islands by Inter-islands Ferry to do?

Lee Long-yan and Lai Tsz-kwan have transformed the stories they collected from island residents into an exhibition. Through these projects, they foreground the network of communities fostered by the Inter-islands Ferry route, telling everyday stories of how the islands coexist and depend on one another.
