Brown Cattle As Messenger

The true mythology of Mui Wo lies not in grand cosmology, but in its brown cattle acting as spiritual messengers. Having witnessed Hong Kong’s shift from an agrarian society to a global metropolis, they now roam forests, beaches, streets, and homes—sometimes welcomed, sometimes not quite sure where they belong.

Moving between the worlds of humans and animals, nature and development, domestic and wild, these cattle are unlikely messengers, wanderers exiled by time. Their presence invites us to look again at Mui Wo and at the ways we share our surroundings with the creatures that inhabit them.

This exhibition explores the many crossings of cattle, people, the city, and nature. It will also feature animal-themed creative contributions from Mui Wo’s Cantonese opera elders.
