Beyond the Tides, Greeting the Queen

Cheung Chau is home to eight major temples and shrines, half of which are devoted to the sea goddess Tin Hau. Eight temples on one small 2.46 square kilometre isle means that people and spirits live together as close neighbours.
For centuries, the sea has brought diverse communities to this island; these shrines both anchor residents to memories of distant homelands, and shelter prayers to the gods for a safe and peaceful sea.
Today, as maritime livelihoods drift further away, these temples also serve as traces of eras past and present.
Cheung Chau residents Zen and Ry use photography and works on paper to take stock of the eight temples and shrines. In the process, they contemplate the historical undercurrents of sea worship and examine the distance between deities and modern islanders today.
