Hidden Mui Wo: land/water/community

How well do we really know the places in our own neighbourhood?
This community walk invites Mui Wo residents and friends to map out the neighbourhood from a slightly different perspective—not through roads, coastlines, or landmarks, but through the felt textures of smell, touch, and sound. We’ll walk through the ‘hood together, noticing things we might normally pass by: the damp air of our wetlands, the bristle of our forest trails and coastal scrublands, the scent of salt and rust on an old gate, the trill of bicycle bells, or the murmur of townfolk moving along inroads and shortcuts.
Along the way, we’ll share memories gathered from Mui Wo storytellers about wet-market stalls, fishing grounds, shady spots, and familiar corners. We’ll look at how the landscape has changed, and at the traces of what remains: old fields beneath new homes, streams that have found new routes, and paths that have become roads or bike trails.
Nature is a co-author of the neighbourhood’s stories, too. Fruit trees mark the seasons, birds signal changing waters, and waves connect us to the larger archipelago—as they’ve done for millenia.
Together, we’ll piece together a different map of Mui Wo—a ‘counter-map’—one made not just of streets and buildings, but of the land, water, people, and more-than-human friends that make this place home.
