Tales of the Island, Fortunes of the Divine

A contemporary island mythology written by the people of Mui Wo

At this ‘story and blessing exchange’, a local artist turns herself into a modern-day fortune-teller. She listens to your stories, draws out your island memories, and turns them into something you can take home— simplifies ancient spiritual devotion into an intimate personal dialogue.

Here’s how it works:

You share a personal story connected to local legends, temple folklore, or everyday life in Lantau, either through conversation or in writing. In exchange, the artist will create a live-painted portrait blended with mythical elements, and offer you a chance to draw a specially updated version of the fortune stick, inspired by the traditional 60 fortunes of Mui Wo’s Hung Shing Temple.

By weaving individual life histories with ancient lore, this installation aims to co-create a timeless "modern island mythology", with Mui Wo residents at the centre.
