Dragon Boat on Land: Paddling and Paddle Painting

Every year on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, Cheung Chau’s seafaring communities send out dragon boats to ferry sea deities, burn offerings, and pray for safety out on and around the water. The stars of this ritual are its three vessels—the Hap Yi, Fook Yuen, and Sin Hing Dragons—which together represent a long tradition of artistry and community.

In this rare peek at the dragon boat craft, master boat restorer Ng Kar Man offers a primer on the annual procession, followed by an on-land paddling experience and paddle-painting workshop. At the end, the paddle you produce will become part of a larger public artwork.

Come be inspired by this rich tradition, make your mark, and walk away knowing better the profound connections between the island, the fishing community, the deities, and the sea.
