The Shop Below the Hill

For decades, Chicken Wings Chan has been a constant presence on a changing Peng Chau. As one of the island’s longest-running restaurants, it witnessed an economic boom in the 1970s, when the area was bustling with cinema-goers and a fresh crowd of weekend visitors from a new housing development across the bay. Then came the quieter years of the 1990s when the factories and cinema shut their doors, followed by a slow and steady revival in the decades to follow.

Through it all, the Chan family has kept both the restaurant going and the neighbourhood’s spirits high, serving beloved family recipes (both old and new!) to a dedicated clientele.

This documentary tells the story of Peng Chau through the eyes of the Chan family, offering a personal window to bigger changes that have shaped life on the island, and in Hong Kong beyond it.
