Match Matchbox

Once upon a time, matchboxes were tiny travelling advertisements for Hong Kong’s shops. The city’s match industry has long since vanished into smoking, taking Peng Chau’s match-making hub with it. Yet these small boxes have survived, carrying with them the names, logos, and former lives of businesses past. When past meets present, what feelings will get stirred up?

This exhibition presents around two hundred old matchboxes, including products from Peng Chau's Great China Match Factory, which ceased operations in 1976. Pick up a box, strike a match, and share the story it calls to mind. The flame may be brief, but the embers of history left in these tiny boxes still smoulder.
