Sessile Being

In a forgotten corner of Nam Wan, Peng Chau, the Sing Lee Hap Kee Lime Factory is one of the last reminders of the island’s  once thriving lime-kiln industry. Lime made by burning seashells, coral, and other marine materials could be used in construction, industry, and agriculture as fertiliser. Although the factory has been designated a Grade III historic building, the structure has deteriorated through neglect.

After studying Peng Chau’s lime-kiln industry and the kiln itself, the artist combined locally sourced oyster shells and ceramic materials once used in the industry to recreate memories of Peng Chau’s lime-kiln heritage and the condition of this century-old site. The resulting work is integrated into the existing environment of the lime kiln.
