Becoming a Lantau Mermaid: A Site-specific Movement Workshop (Shap Long Beach)

‘Among the peaks of old Wanshan / Many Lo Tings reside / They take on a human shape or form / Male and female ones alike.’ — Qu Dajun, Lo Ting poem

Half-fish, half-human, the mythical creature Lo Ting has long been associated with Lantau Island and its surrounding waters. If a Lo Ting could dance, what would it look like?

Over the past year, Alysa Leung has been travelling between Thailand, Indonesia, and Japan, studying regional mermaid myths and seafaring practices to imagine up a way of embodying the Lo Ting form.

In this 90-minute workshop, you’ll learn to move like a Lo Ting too. On the Lantau shores, we will slow our breath, hear mermaid myths from across Asia, and together co-create a site-specific mermaid dance. Through this somatic experience,  we reconnect our bodies to the sea, transforming collective imagination into a contemporary ritual.
