Sound Translator - Cheung Chau

So Wai Lam
Sound Translator - Cheung Chau

‘What are the sounds you usually hear when you are/ were working at sea or on the island?’

‘What is the sound of the sea?’ ‘Can you share with us your most remarkable auditory experience?’

I invite fishermen and other inhabitants working and living on Cheung Chau to share their auditory experiences by interviews and field recordings. Through their voices, we get to know another layer of the lives of the Cheung Chau locals in the form of sound. Different tones, rhythms and pitch make every person’s voice unique.

With all the sounds collected on the island, “Sound Translator - Cheung Chau” weaves the sounds of people together, re-presents their lives on the shore, and introduces an alternative way to listen to the land and sea.
